  32.                  Will We Keep Our Constitution "Matchless?"
  33.

  35.      Today many politicians and government functionaries are saying
  36. the Constitution is outdated and needs to be rewritten for modern
  37. times.  I wonder how many of those calling for this have recently read
  38. the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence?
  39.  
  40.      I read them again last night and came to the conclusion that
  41. these documents are extremely appropriate for our times and need no
  42. alterations.  What is needed is for our government to follow what
  43. Alexis De Tocqueville called our "matchless Constitution."  It is
  44. still matchless, it is just the politicians that have become corrupted
  45. and in need of replacement.
  46.  
  47.      First, let us look at a few lines from the Declaraion of
  48. Independence:
  49.  
  50. o    "He has erected a multitude  of New Offices, and sent hither
  51. swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance." 
  52. The "he" meant King George, but put in "the President" and it is
  53. totally appropriate today.  Our government has established so many new 
  54. agencies to tax, regulate, and otherwise "eat out our substance."
  55.  
  56. o    "He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction
  57. foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws."  Just
  58. look at the Biodiversity Treaty and all the other treaties being
  59. foisted on the American public without the knowledge or consent of "We
  60. the People."   By making us subject to United Nations and other
  61. international controls, these agreements infringe on our sovereignty
  62. and erode the Constitution.
  63.  
  64. o    "For imposing Taxes on as without our Consent." (No need to
  65. elaborate on this one.)
  66.  
  67. o    "For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by
  68. Jury."  This is especially egregious right now.  A friend of mine was
  69. "tried and convicted" in the Washington Post months before he ever got
  70. to a courtroom.  "Officials" from EPA, IRS, and other agencies make
  71. decisions about people's "guilt" and go after them with government
  72. regulations and edicts.   The accused never gets to court but often
  73. loses his property, livelihood and even family in the process.  People
  74. who have "committed" environmental "crimes," or have the wrong
  75. politics, or who can be labeled as cultists or other kinds of wackos,
  76. are being murdered or sent to jail while real criminals serve no time.
  77.  
  78. o    "For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws
  79. and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments."  The present
  80. federal government has sworn to uphold the Constitution and then
  81. repeatedly and with deliberation has trampled it.    The Constitution
  82. as written by our forefathers is as relevant today as it was over two
  83. hundred years ago.  This nation would be even greater than it was in
  84. 1776 if men had followed the Constitution rather than their greed and
  85. lust for power.

  89.      Now let us go over just a few points in the Constitution itself:

  91.      The Bill of Rights is in shreds.  *The First Amendment -
  92. concerning freedom of religion and speech now seems to protect only
  93. "politically correct" religions and speech.  Those who would remind
  94. government that the Constitution is based on western culture or
  95. Judeo/Christianity are labeled the "religious right" even if they have
  96. never set foot in a church.   Those who would question the federal
  97. government, those who would question public policy based on pseudo-
  98. scientific data, are labelled as promoters of raping and pillaging the
  99. earth and all its resources.
  100.  
  101.      *The Second Amendment - the right to bear arms - now should be
  102. read the right to disarm law-abiding citizens.  Handgun Control Inc.,
  103. the Attorney General, the President, and the Congress, have done much
  104. to obliterate the Second Amendment in spite of protest from the
  105. Constitutionally literate populace.
  106.  
  107.      *The Fourth Amendment - the right to be secure from unreasonable
  108. searches and seizures - is just fine if you redefine "unreasonable" or
  109. insert the word "not" after "right."  Too many American citizens have
  110. had to endure unlawful searches and had their private papers,
  111. belongings and other property seized by quasi-governmental officials
  112. who would not even have the authority to act as they do if they were
  113. legitimate.

  115.      *The Fifth Amendment disallows taking private property without
  116. just compensation.  We believers in the beauty and immutability of the
  117. Constitution are still trying to find where it now says that "just
  118. compensation" is applicable in very few cases and then it means "no
  119. more than 1% of the value of the property taken."
  120.  
  121.      *The Tenth Amendment reserves powers not Constitutionally
  122. delegated to the federal government to the States or to the people. 
  123. Our President, the Congress, and the Supreme Court have seen fit to
  124. totally ignore this last article comprising the Bill of Rights.  These
  125. parties have signed international treaties that supersede the
  126. Constitution, they have written laws that take power from the states
  127. without their consent, and, perhaps using ESP, they read things into
  128. the Constitution that just are not there in black and white.

  131.      This assault on the Declaration of Independence and the
  132. Constitution has been bi-partisan.  Those who are wallowing at the
  133. public trough care not that our forefathers first fought for our
  134. freedoms and then toiled long and  hard to draft a document that could
  135. and should keep us free from tyranny, in any form, for the life of our
  136. great country.

  138.      In the late 1700s almost every family had a copy of the
  139. Constitution and read it frequently.  According  to Thomas Paine,
  140. "Every member of the Government had a copy; and nothing was more
  141. common when any debate arose on the principle of a bill, or on the
  142. extent of any species of authority, than for the Members to take the
  143. printed Constitution out of their pocket and read the chapter with
  144. which such matter in debate was connected."  When was the last time
  145. (if ever) that you saw a member of Congress open the Constitution
  146. (even on C-Span)?
  147.  
  148.      Just as the religious christian reads the Bible regularly, the
  149. conscientious Jew reads the Talmud, and the pious Muslim consults the
  150. Koran, so must the patriotic American read the Constitution.  And,
  151. more importantly, we must require that our representatives abide by it
  152. - not some warped and hallucinatory version they keep tucked in the
  153. back of their memory.

  155.      Our present federal government - Republicans, Democrats, and
  156. independents alike - would be wise to re read the Declaration of
  157. Independence.  Bye changing a few of the phrases from the 1770s to
  158. present time, it would be difficult not to see the relevancy.

  166.      Putting People First has announced plans to complement its North
  167. American FAX network with a daily live call-in radio talk show called
  168. Grassroots Radio.  Hosted by Kathleen Marquardt, it will reach a wide
  169. afternoon commuter audience, including many who never read our news
  170. and comments about animal rights and Green extremism.
  171.  
  172.      Distributed over Talk America Radio Network in Boston, Grassroots
  173. Radio will be available for local station pickup from three
  174. communications satellites.  It will air live Monday through Friday
  175. from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Eastern time, or may be rebroadcast on tape delay. 
  176. It will go on-air in late October.
  177.  
  178.      This will be the first daily talk show to regularly address the
  179. issues of animal rights and Green extremism.  Grassroots Radio will
  180. expand this scope to cover a full range of commentary on social and
  181. political issues of the day.  Most shows will feature a guest
  182. interview with listener call-in on an 800-number, other days will be
  183. set aside entirely for listener discussion.  All shows will include
  184. Kathleen's trademark style of listener involvement in public policy by
  185. letters, phone calls, or FAX, thus the name, Grassroots Radio.
  186.  
  187.      We need your help to make Grassroots Radio a success. we must
  188. expand our affiliate base to reach a large audience and we must raise
  189. funds to pay for satellite time.  Here's what we need you to do:
  190.  
  191. * Urge your local AM radio stations to carry Grassroots Radio.  If
  192. your organization has members or clients in different areas, please
  193. ask them to contact their stations too.  Urban and rural - we need
  194. them all.

  196.  
  197. * Dedicate some of your advertising budget to Grassroots Radio.  We
  198. will have a listenership that's knowledgeable and sympathetic to you,
  199. and Kathleen will be dealing with issues that complement your message.
  200.  
  201. * Give Putting People First a grant to help it pay for the research
  202. staff, technical equipment, and other costs necessary to support
  203. Grassroots Radio and our FAX network.
